Malaga airport to open 2nd runway
As a key part of Malaga airport’s ongoing modernisation and expansion program, its brand new second runway is now set to open in the summer, which will increase the airport’s capacity from 37 to as many as 72 take-offs and landings per hour.
This new runway also means Malaga will become the fifth airport in Spain to have two or more runways – after Madrid, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca and Gran Canaria airports.
All that remains to do before the new runway officially opens, is for Aena to complete the certification process, staff training and final tests and The State Air Security Agency, Aesa to carry out last minute inspections just to make sure everything is ready before the big opening.
Once the runway is goes into operation, the authorities at the airport intend to phase it in gradually, according to demand.
Work on the second runway began way back in 2007 and according to airport sources, the total cost of the project has come in at somewhere in the region of 400M Euros.
The need for a new runway to cope with increased demand is further proof that despite the recession, the Costa del Sol is still an incredibly popular destination for tourists, foreigners that own property on the coast and indeed, those now looking to buy a property in Spain.
And given current market conditions and the effect it’s had on lowering Spanish house prices generally, whether you’re looking to buy a luxury villa in Marbella, a beach front apartment in San Pedro, a townhouse in Estepona or a country house in Casares, acquiring a property on the Costa del Sol is now more cost effective than for many, many years.
