Capanes del Golf, Benahavis, Marbella – 2, 3 and 4 bedroom luxury apartments and penthouses for sale on a unique ‘golf island’

Those of you who’ve spent any time at all on Spain’s Costa del Sol will know that there’s far more to living here than just the beach, the sea and the sand.

The residential areas a few minutes inland from the coast are amongst the most idyllic areas to be found anywhere in Spain, if not Europe, and they offer a completely different pace of Mediterranean life than the typical hustle and bustle of the coastal towns.

The village of Behahavis, is a typical example. It’s just 7km inland from the coast – a short 10 minute drive away from the beach – yet it could easily be in the heart of inland rural Andalucia.

Capanes del Golf is a new development of luxurious 2, 3 and 4 bedroom apartments and penthouses situated roughly halfway along the road from the coast to Benahavis.

And it’s a development all about rural country living…and golf, as it’s set, like a residential ‘golf island’, on a hill right in the middle of the latest 9-hole Marbella Club golf course, El Higueral.

The 32 colonial-style blocks that make up the development contain some 267 properties all told, each named after a well-known Spanish golf course. They share some 50,000m2 of landscaped Mediterranean gardens between them.

When I visited the other day, I actually thought these blocks looked more like large villas than apartment buildings, which I think only adds to their overall charm.

And I’m not the only one to be charmed by this development.

It’s proved to be extremely popular amongst buyers from all over Europe and beyond since the moment it first went on the market.

Used as both holiday homes and full-time residencies, the developers say just a shade under half the apartments here are occupied at any given time throughout the year.

And it’s no wonder. Who wouldn’t want to spend as much time here as possible, given its location, the overall standard of the development and the on-site facilities at hand?

With prices starting at €543,000 for a 2-bedroomed apartment, the properties on sale here are aimed towards the higher end of the market, and that’s reflected in their quality.

In the expert hands of Mar from the development’s sales office, I took a look around one of the show flats in the block named “La Noria.”

Like each block in the complex, this apartment can be accessed either from an underground parking area or directly from the street.

Both lifts and stairwells are on hand to take you to a rustic-style front door, which features a square ‘confessional box-type’ spy door replete with iron bars so you can safely check who’s coming to call before you open the door, (although with the 24 hour guards and hi-tech security in place throughout the development, this is strictly a decorative touch than actual safety measure).

Inside, the apartment was blessed with Egyptian marble floors throughout and a generous amount of open living space, particularly in the living/dining room area which had direct access via double-glazed sliding glass patio doors out to a terrace which spanned the entire width of the property.

The terrace is big enough to house an outdoor dining area and 2 different living areas and in the case of this particular show flat, overlooks the central pool, ‘chiringuito’ and spa/gym area.

I have to say, it’s a lovely view.

In keeping with the country setting, pine trees and conifers abound, alongside the ubiquitous Mediterranean palms and sub-tropical plants.

The wooden, thatched-roofed ‘chiringuito’ (a covered pool side beach bar-esque area) is an impressive construction in itself and according to Mar, the veritable hub of social life in the complex during the warmer months.

But back inside to the apartment…

The kitchen features granite work tops, comes fully-equipped with Siemens appliances, has direct access out the terrace and boasts a considerable amount of storage space.

There’s also plenty of storage space in the hallways leading to the bedrooms too.

A guest bathroom features a glassed walled walk-in shower and marble throughout.

And so to the bedrooms, both of which are of a size you’d expect of a property at this end of the market and have access out to the property’s terrace.

A small yet thoughtful detail in the bedroom wardrobes are the built-in shoe racks.

Another interesting feature of the property is the pre-installed surround sound music system, which can be linked to your TV, iPod, stereo or whatever musical system you have set up.

Simply pop a CD in your machine in the living/dining room, and you can either listen to it there, or relaxing in bed via speakers recessed in the ceiling.

Ingenious stuff.

Mar explained that the apartment’s other standard features include hot and cold air conditioning, a built-in alarm system, plus a direct phone connection to the development’s 24hr. concierge service in the gatehouse.

The master bedroom has an en suite bathroom with a double sink and a simple colossal glass-enclosed ‘King size’ walk-in shower.

After we left the show flat, Mar asked if I fancied taking a quick peek at the spa and pool area.

You betcha!

On the way Mar explained the complex boasts some 5 different pools all told, distributed across the various green zones between the blocks.

We found the central pool bordered by a wide sun terrace and set in a beautiful garden, complete with tumbling waterfalls and other exquisite water features.

Next to the pool is the wooden ‘chiringuito’ with its high thatched roof, chairs, tables and bar, which is open during the summer months.

The spa at Capanes del Golf

Unlimited use of the spa and gym is included in the buying price of each apartment.

Although the Spa is kept locked, all owners are issued with a key.

The developers say this is purely a security measure to make sure small children don’t stray unaccompanied from the pool area and get into difficulties in the sauna, the steam room or under the powerful massage jets that blast the pool.

A sensible precaution, it would seem.

The interior of the glass-enclosed spa and pool area is kept at a constant 28-30 degrees. A grey slate tiled floor leads takes you past male and female changing rooms to the pool itself, which is bordered by wooden decking and a sprinkling of stylish deck chairs.

As I mentioned previously, the pool features powerful water massage jets to blast away the stresses and strains of modern life.

And if that’s not you cup of tea, there’s a steam bath (with delightful twinkling star lights set into its tiled ceiling), a sauna, a fully-equipped gym and a massage room, although as Mar pointed out, you’ll have to bring your own masseuse.

One final and important thing to mention about Capanes del Golf – shares in ‘El Higueral’ golf are included in the buying price of each apartment.

Furthermore, these shares are full transferable and the club operate a strict policy of not selling shares directly to anyone else apart from Capanes del Golf buyers, so the shares are set to retain their value indefinitely.

That said, buyers taking advantage of the offer will be required to pay an additional €1.100/year as a maintenance fee. A small price to pay perhaps, for access to a superb course which is set to be extended to a magnificent 18-holes.
